As 2022 winds down, it’s time to start thinking about the home trends that make the most sense for next year’s remodels, renovations, and additions. While personal taste is always the first priority, we’ve isolated six 2023 home trends that are more than just fads.
2023 Home Trends That Will Last For Decades
Many home trends come and go. This is fine for fixtures and finishes that are easier to swap out, such as carpeting, paint colors, or portable decor that can be bought, enjoyed, and replaced with ever-changing fads. However, we prefer focusing on trends with some longevity ahead of them, so your final remodel is more timeless than transient.
Here are six of the 2023 home trends we believe are here to stay.
1. Nature-Inspired Spaces
Previous years’ shutdowns forced us to get creative, and designs supporting indoor/outdoor lifestyles were never more appreciated. In fact, outdoor living spaces are one of the most popular requests when it comes to additions or renovations in rooms that lend themselves to large sliders, picture windows, or luxurious french doors that create an easy flow from the interior to the exterior of the home.

You can take that motif a step further by creating nature-inspired spaces. Ideas to consider are:
- Sunrooms
- Built-in planters with adequate drainage
- Living walls or roofs
- Ample daylighting to support indoor plant growth (skylights, solar tubes, large windows, and sliding or accordion patio doors
Other features that celebrate nature-inspired spaces include hardwood floors (or tile planks that replicate real wood) and natural textiles.
2. Add Sconces to the Lighting Design
Sconces have a magical way of creating the sense of a smaller, cozier space within a larger, open-concept design. These days, interior lighting designs are integrating sconces more than ever before.

Feel free to get a little crazy and select sconces that are more unique or artistic than the standard cup or upturned lantern versions. Look for sconces that have some movement, color, or a bit of flair to increase visual interest on neutral walls.
3. Repurposing and Upcycling
Before you start shopping online and in furniture warehouses, spend some time evaluating what you already have, what relatives may be willing to pass on to you, and what’s sitting around in local thrift stores and ReStores in the area. Today’s homeowners spend more time reupholstering, refinishing, and repainting than ever before. It’s a smart way to save money while also giving furniture with “good bones” a fresh new upgrade.

We want to emphasize that point about Restores. DeLand’s ReStore is located on Spring Garden Ave and offers an incredible variety of low-priced items ranging from flooring materials, doors, and windows to home fixtures and furnishings. In addition to keeping things out of landfills, all of the proceeds go to our local Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
4. Blending the Old with New Using Meaningful Objects
That’s a perfect segue to the next 2023 home trend, which is mixing antiques and vintage items with new ones. This trend emphasizes holding on to what is meaningful and letting other things go. Your design team can work with you to integrate family heirlooms and precious furnishings with your contemporary design in new and beautiful ways.
As with #3’s focus on upcycling and repurposing, there’s no reason to scrap grandpa’s ugly wingback chair or grandma’s scratched-up sewing table when you can simply reupholster or refinish them to suit your aesthetic preferences.
5. Organize, Organize, Organize
The combination of the Mari Kondo craze around decluttering by prioritizing what brings you joy and the pandemic’s months of shutdown yielded a newfound obsession with decluttering and organization. That obsession is showing up left and right in the home trends world via well-designed spaces with ample options for functional storage.

No matter how small your space is, we have plenty of ideas on adding storage to existing spaces and integrating them into your upcoming remodel or addition. The result is a cleaner and tidier aesthetic, with lots of hidden spaces to store all that unused stuff.
6. Luxury Laundry and Mudroom Spaces
The indoor/outdoor lifestyle demands a laundry and mudroom designed to handle all that passes through its doors. In addition to plenty of room for folding, hang drying, and ironing, we’re also designing laundry and mudrooms with other functional features like:
- Pet feeding stations with pet food/accessory storage
- Pet washing (and human washing) stations
- Pool and yard toy/accessory storage
- Gardening tools and accessories
- Cubbies and hangers for kids’ outdoor shoes, backpacks, and jackets
- Oversized mud tubs
- Craft supply storage (let your laundry room island serve as both a folding station and crafts/hobby space)

Ultimately, you want to design a laundry room personally oriented to your household’s needs in addition to having durable, easy-to-clean and maintainable surfaces and finishes.
